Welcome To Woolsery
Or Woolfardisworthy West to give the village its correct title, but we think Woolsery is a little more friendly.
Woolsery is set within unspoiled rolling North Devon countryside with wonderful coastlines and country walks, and has a heritage going back to the Doomsday book and beyond. The heart of the village was built around the Norman Church and has grown over time into a thriving community with something for everyone. Our Village School is one of the best in the area, and we have a pre-school group know as Sunflowers. We hold annual events that the whole village gets involved in such as the Woolsery Street Fair, The Weekend of Gardens and the Woolsery show, as well as various local Clubs and Societies to suit all ages, many of which are held at our award winning Community Hall.
CPRE & MVF’s Best Kept Village Competition
Woolsery is the most delightful village to judge. It is so very neat & tidv, and it is difficult to find any litter at all. Webegan our judging at the superb village hall, which was very busy with activities on this less than ideal Saturday morning. It was good to see so many children involved in a variety of activities inside the hall as well as football outside.
It was interesting and uplifting to read all about the history and details of energy efficiency and environmental responsible characteristics of this fine hall. Much could be found out about the many clubs and societies using the hall such as weight watchers, aerobics and dancing to name a few. The notices showing the Cider & Pasty Walk, Village Fayre & Flower Festival, provided further evidence of the huge amount of activities offered to all.
All Hallows Church with its wonderful 13th century tower was not locked and it was a pleasure to go inside. The churchyard was neat and tidy yet allowing wild flowers to flourish between the graves. The paths were clear with the edges neatly clipped. The Methodist Church and All Hallows work together with some joint services, another indication of cohesion in this most happy of villages. The fine school is a majestic building overseeing the centre of the village. The playground looked very clean and tidy, as does the rest of the village.
Notice boards displayed the fact that Woolsery had entered the BKV Competition and from the state of the village it was clear that everyone was aware of this - indeed people were seen gardening and even doing other outside tasks in spite of the rain. There are many newer houses in Woolsery, which blend in well with the older properties and are in excellent condition.
The bus shelter outside the Church was clean and tidy and looked cosy and comfortable sheltered under the huge chestnut tree. The telephone kiosk outside Ivy Cottage was in good condition, although there was some rubbish on the floor. This was the only litter observed on our visit. The footpath at the end of the village on the way back to Bucks Cross was a little overgrown but totally accessible.
Andrew and Son’s garage looked as neat and tidy as a garage could be given the nature of the work carried out. The Village Shop and post office, now a Londis, was a most pleasant surprise compared to our last visit to Woolsery. It is bright and clean with an excellent selection of fresh and local food as well as the basic goods one might need. The atmosphere was most welcoming and it must be a great comfort to the village to have such a shop there.
Woolsery deserves the high mark given and one leaves the village feeling that it must be a delight to live there, and benefit from all that is available, given the clearly responsible and cohesive population.
Anybody who has contributed to the above should feel justly proud.
Anybody who has benefited from the above should thank those who have created it.
Anybody who does not appreciate it, should get out and about, join in, and discover what a real community is about.
